Who I Am
I am Javier Chávez, The Federal Interview Prep Coach. My federal career began in 2004 at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma where I worked in administration, contracting, IT, and program analysis. These early roles gave me a wide view of how agencies operate and how careers develop across different fields.
In 2016 I transitioned into federal human resources and moved to the DC area. Since then I have focused on coaching executives and employees on structured interviews, helping individuals write strong end of year accomplishments, and refining executive-level interview questions so they produced responses aligned with the position requirements.
This journey from field to headquarters and across multiple disciplines gives me a unique perspective. I understand the challenges federal employees face at every level and know how to help candidates present their experience in ways that connect with interview panels.

Absolutely! In fact, it's best to start preparing for the interview process as soon as you start applying for different positions. By getting a head start on researching the position, anticipating potential questions, and developing your responses, you'll be in a much stronger position when your interview invitation finally arrives. Practicing will help you feel confident and ready to showcase your experience and expertise effectively.
I've already done the first interview and I didn't get a second one. What if I've already missed my chance to show them why I'm a fit for the role?
It's not too late! Even if you've already completed the first interview and didn't get a callback for a second one yet, you still an opportunity to improve your performance for future interviews. By working with me, we can identify areas for improvement and ensure you're fully ready to ace the next round. The key is being proactive and not waiting until the last minute.
Does the government conduct more than one interview?
You bet cha’! Interviews are just one tool in the tool box for vetting candidates. Hiring officials want to make sure they really get to know the candidate’s experience, as it relates to the job requirements, and see if they’re a fit for the team, organization, and the mission. Sometimes this process can take place over one or more interviews. This is why it’s so important you practice!
I'm applying for a detail to another position in my Agency or with another agency, do you think the agency will interview?
Chances are they will interview or at the minimum, they'll have a conversation with candidates to get to know more about them and their experience to determine fit. If you're applying for a temporary detail or rotation, others are too! Even if the interview is more conversational instead of a traditional structured interview, you should still practice. Don't leave this up to chance, practice makes perfect!
